Communication & Evangelization

Year I, Issue N°1 - June 2025

Two Pontificates, One Mission

Let us disarm communication from all prejudice, resentment, fanaticism and hatred
Pope Leo XIV, May 12, 2025

🇬🇧 ENGLISH

Dear sisters communicators, with this first issue we begin a formative journey born in a moment of extraordinary grace for the Church.

In just a few months, we have witnessed the transition between two pontificates that have placed communication at the center of the Church's mission with surprising magisterial continuity.

Pope Francis reminded us that "to communicate is to go out a little from ourselves to give something of mine to the other" and challenged us: "Are you true in your life, not just in your words?"

Pope Leo XIV calls us "blessed peacemakers" (Mt 5:9) and invites us to a "disarmed and disarming communication".

🇮🇹 ITALIANO

Communication as Beatitude

Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God
Matthew 5:9

Elements of the "Communicator's Beatitude"

🇬🇧 The Four Pillars

  1. Not seeking consensus at all costs - Overcoming audience logic to embrace truth logic
  2. Not clothing oneself in aggressive words - Meekness as communicative strength
  3. Not embracing the competition model - Collaboration vs destructive confrontation
  4. Never separating the search for truth from love - Truth without love becomes violence

🇮🇹 I Quattro Pilastri

"Disarmed Communication"

Pope Leo XIV introduces a revolutionary concept: communication must be "disarmed from all prejudice, resentment, fanaticism and hatred".

💡 Key Concept: Communicative Disarmament

  • Disarming words: Choosing terms that build
  • Disarming images: Showing complexity
  • Disarming attitudes: Opening to listening

Examples of "Disarmed Communication" Around the World

📻 CASE 1: Radio Maria Burundi

During the 1994 genocide, while Radio Mille Collines incited hatred, Radio Maria Burundi chose the opposite path: broadcasting messages of peace, reconciliation and refugee protection.

Lesson: Disarmed communication requires physical and moral courage.

🕊️ CASE 2: Peace Journalism in Colombia

During the peace process with FARC, some Colombian journalists experimented with "periodismo de paz": telling the conflict without fueling it.

Lesson: It's possible to report on war without waging a war of words.

🌍 CASE 3: Terra Santa News

The agency practices communication that presents conflicts without taking sides, giving voice to all actors.

Lesson: Neutrality is not indifference, but love for complete truth.

Testimonies from the Field

🎤 "I Learned to Disarm My Words"

Marta Rodríguez, EWTN Español journalist

"When I started doing religious journalism, I thought my job was to 'defend' the Church. I used military language: 'attack' criticism, 'fight' prejudice..."
"Pope Leo XIV's teaching made me realize I was wrong. Now I try to 'accompany' the reader, 'illuminate' instead of attack, 'build bridges' instead of winning wars."
Result: "My articles now reach even those who disagree with me. I learned that truth doesn't need weapons, but witnesses."
