Artificial Intelligence and Discernment: The Communicator's Responsibility

Dear sister communicators,
We are living the greatest communicative revolution since Gutenberg's time. Artificial intelligence is no longer science fiction, but daily reality. ChatGPT, recommendation algorithms, deep fakes, automatic translation: AI is radically transforming how we create, distribute and consume information.
Pope Leo XIV, with his usual foresight, immediately grasped the spiritual and ethical implications of this transformation. He didn't condemn technology, but called us to a "responsibility proportional to age and social roles" we hold.
But Pope Francis had already launched a prophetic alarm against what he defined as "brain rot" caused by continuous scrolling on social media. The Holy Father had identified in the Oxford Dictionary the "word of the year" describing our digital addiction: doom scrolling, the compulsive scrolling that numbs the mind and paralyzes the will.
During the XVI Seminar, the challenge emerged clearly: how to use AI to evangelize instead of being evangelized by technology? How to maintain discernment in a world of algorithms that decide what we see, what we think, what we buy?
The answer is not in Luddite rejection of technology, nor in uncritical acceptance. Pope Leo XIV proposes a "middle way": "we need courageous entrepreneurs, courageous computer engineers, so that the beauty of communication is not corrupted".
The Christian communicator of 2025 must be "algorithm-wise": capable of using AI while maintaining humanity, exploiting machine power without losing the soul of communication.
This month we explore how to integrate artificial intelligence and spiritual discernment for communication that remains at the service of truth and love.

Viviamo la più grande rivoluzione comunicativa dai tempi di Gutenberg. L'intelligenza artificiale non è più fantascienza, ma realtà quotidiana. ChatGPT, algoritmi di raccomandazione, deep fake, traduzione automatica: l'AI sta trasformando radicalmente il modo in cui creiamo, distribuiamo e consumiamo informazione.
Papa Leone XIV, con la sua consueta lungimiranza, ha colto immediatamente le implicazioni spirituali e etiche di questa trasformazione. Non ha condannato la tecnologia, ma ci ha chiamato a una "responsabilità proporzionata all'età e ai ruoli sociali" che ricopriamo.
Ma già Papa Francesco aveva lanciato un allarme profetico contro quella che ha definito "putrefazione cerebrale" causata dal continuo scrolling sui social media. Il Santo Padre aveva identificato nell'Oxford Dictionary la "parola dell'anno" che descrive la no stra dipendenza digitale: doom scrolling, lo scorrimento compulsivo che intorpidisce la mente e paralizza la volontà.
Durante il XVI Seminario, è emersa chiaramente la sfida: come usare l'AI per evangelizzare invece di essere evangelizzati dalla tecnologia? Come mantenere il discernimento in un mondo di algoritmi che decidono cosa vediamo, cosa pensiamo, cosa compriamo?
La risposta non è nel rifiuto luddista della tecnologia, ma nemmeno nell'accettazione acritica. Papa Leone XIV ci propone una "via media": "abbiamo bisogno di imprenditori coraggiosi, di ingegneri informatici coraggiosi, perché non sia corrotta la bellezza della comunicazione".
Il comunicatore cristiano del 2025 deve essere "algoritmo-sapiente": capace di usare l'AI mantenendo la propria umanità, di sfruttare la potenza della macchina senza perdere l'anima della comunicazione.
Questo mese esploriamo come integrare intelligenza artificiale e discernimento spirituale per una comunicazione che rimanga al servizio della verità e dell'amore.

Based on pontifical magisterium and reflections from the XVI Seminar, we develop a practical theology of AI for Christian communicators:
Theological Perspective: Artificial intelligence, like every technology, is ambivalent: it can be an instrument of liberation or oppression, truth or falsehood, communion or isolation.

Discernment Question: "Am I building real or virtual relationships?"
Practical Rule: AI can support but not replace human encounter
CREATIVITY vs REPRODUCTION
AI can help creativity but also limit it to existing patterns
Discernment Question: "Am I creating something new or reproducing existing?"
Practical Rule: Use AI as springboard, not destination
EFFICIENCY vs EFFECTIVENESS
AI optimizes efficiency, but Christian communication aims for spiritual effectiveness
Discernment Question: "Am I communicating faster or better?"
Practical Rule: Spiritual quality is never sacrificeable to speed
PERSONALIZATION vs MANIPULATION
Algorithms personalize content but can manipulate preferences
Discernment Question: "Am I serving the person or programming their desires?"
Practical Rule: Transparency in recommendation algorithms
ACCESSIBILITY vs DEPENDENCY
AI makes many capabilities accessible but can create dependency
Discernment Question: "Am I facilitating or replacing human abilities?"
Practical Rule: Always maintain ability to function without AI
GLOBALIZATION vs INCULTURATION
AI tends to homogenize, but Gospel incarnates in cultures
Discernment Question: "Am I respecting cultural specificities?"
Practical Rule: Always adapt AI output to local context
Characteristics of Christian AI:
- Transparency: Algorithms must be understandable and verifiable
- Inclusivity: No discrimination based on race, gender, religion
- Sustainability: Attention to AI's environmental impact
- Humanity: AI must exalt, not replace, human dignity
AI at the Service of Evangelization: Successes and Risks
🙏 CASE 1: "Pray.com" - AI for Personalized Prayer
Innovation: The app uses machine learning algorithms to personalize prayers, meditations and spiritual readings based on user's mood, life situation and religious tradition.
Successes:
- 10 million active users worldwide
- Automatic translation in 40 languages
- Accessibility for people with visual/hearing disabilities
- 24/7 spiritual accompaniment for isolated people
Identified Risks:
- "Fast food" spirituality: Pre-packaged prayers vs authentic contemplation
- Commercial algorithms: Recommendations based on engagement, not spiritual growth
- Digital dependency: Replacement of human spiritual direction
🌍 CASE 2: Vatican News and AI Translation
Challenge: Vatican News needed to translate content in real time into dozens of languages to reach faithful worldwide.
AI Solution: Implementation of neural automatic translation systems, integrated with human review for theologically sensitive content.
Results:
- 80% reduction in translation times

Problems Emerged:

A practical methodology to evaluate and use AI in religious communication:
DIGNITY (Does AI respect human dignity?)
Evaluation Criteria:
- Does AI treat every person as end, not means?
- Does it respect privacy and decision autonomy?
- Does it avoid discrimination and stereotypes?
Practical Test: "Would I use this AI with an elderly relative or child?"
INTENTION (Why am I using AI?)
Self-Analysis:
- For genuine efficiency or laziness?
- To reach more people or avoid human encounter?
- To amplify message or modify it?
Discernment Prayer: "Holy Spirit, purify my intentions in using this technology"
SUSTAINABILITY (Environmental and social impact)
Considerations:
- Energy consumption of data centers
- Impact on human jobs
- Accessibility for the poorest
Franciscan Rule: "Every technology must be friend of common home"
CONTROL (Who controls AI?)
Key Questions:
- Who programmed the algorithms?
- What biases might be incorporated?
- Can I understand how it works?
Transparency Principle: "What I cannot understand, I cannot ethically control"
EVANGELIZATION (Does AI serve the mission?)
Missionary Verification:
- Does it facilitate Gospel announcement?
- Does it build community or isolate people?
- Does it lead toward Christ or toward technology?
Comboni Criterion: "Everything for the Kingdom, nothing for ourselves"
RELATIONSHIP (Does AI favor encounter?)
Relational Evaluation:
- Does it improve or replace human relationships?
- Does it facilitate or complicate communication?
- Does it lead toward intimacy or superficiality?
Incarnation Test: "Would Jesus use this tool to approach people?"
NEUTRALITY (Is AI really neutral?)
Critical Analysis:
- What values are implicit in the algorithm?
- Does it favor some worldviews?
- Is it compatible with Christian anthropology?
Discernment Principle: "Test everything, hold fast what is good" (1Th 5:21)
